CINEMA CAMP

Antoine Barraud is a French director, scriptwriter and producer. Since 2004 his various shorts and two feature films (Les Gouffres, 2012 and Le Dos rouge, 2015) have been widely screened in France and in various international film festivals, such as at the Cinémathèque française, Locarno Film Festival, FID Marseille, Berlinale, etc. Barraud also created portraits of directors Kenneth Anger, Kohei Oguri, Shuji Terayama and Koji Wakamatsu, co-directed a Super-8 tribute to New York photographer Weegee, also worked with various independent filmmakers such as Tsai Ming-Liang, Stephen Dwoskin, João Pedro Rodrigues and Marie Losier. He is currently working on a film project "Monument Valley" together with Didier D’Abreu, and prepares his new feature "Madeleine Collins".

Amber Bemak is a filmmaker, artist, and educator. Her work is based in experimental and documentary film and also spans performance art and curatorial practice. For the past two decades, she has been engaged in a multi-layered exploration of performance and film which uses the body as a sight for socio-political inquiry, engages with text, language, and translation to open up discourse around deeply embedded colonization narratives, and commits to linking the intimate and personal with larger institutional systems and structures. 

Anne Chamberlain is a filmmaker, educator, and gender rights activist. Her series of original 16mm shorts from the 1980s and ‘90s is preserved in the UCLA Film Archives “Legacy Project.” She has taught in and created media studies curriculum for the Departments of Film, Women, and LGBTQ Studies at City College of San Francisco, and also for The Harvey Milk Institute. Recently, Anne designed and taught courses titled Cinematography, Women Directors, and Documentary in the Academy of Art University’s Online Division. Her current teaching at AAU includes a Masters level course called Motion Picture Theory & Style, and an undergraduate elective class titled The Beatles in the Visual Arts. She holds an MFA in Cinema & Photography from Southern Illinois University where she received a Graduate Dean’s Fellowship, the Masters Woman of Distinction Award, and the Elizabeth Eames Women’s Studies Scholarship. Anne also holds a BA in History, along with a Certificate in Film Studies from Indiana University.

Elena Gorfinkel is senior lecturer in Film Studies at King’s College London. She is the author of Lewd Looks: American Sexploitation Cinema in the 1960s (2017); co-editor of Global Cinema Networks (2018) and Taking Place: Location and the Moving Image (2011), and a recent issue of Feminist Media Histories, on “Sex & the Materiality of Adult Media” (5.2, 2019). She is working on two books, Theory of the Prop, co-written with John David Rhodes, and Aesthetic Strike: Cinemas of Exhaustion, which was awarded a 2018 Arts Writers Grant. She writes criticism in Sight & Sound, Art Monthly, Cinemascope and other publications.

Brit Jensen is Danish audio documentary maker based in Czech Republic. Brit has been working as commissioning editor in the documentary department of the Czech Radio since 2015. A number of her radio features have aired on the Czech national Radio, but she has also produced programs for BBC, ABC and Danish radios. Her work has been shorlisted at international radio competitions and the series “Yusra swims for her life” (co-authored with Magdalena Sodomkova) won the Czech National Journalist prize in 2017.

Almudena Escobar Lopez is an independent curator, programmer, archivist, and researcher from Galicia. She is Time-Based Media Curatorial Assistant at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY and is a Ph.D. candidate in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. Her research considers affect as an alternative collaborative approach to knowledge questioning the limits of institutional archives. She has curated programs for The Alternative Film/Video film festival in Belgrade, The Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival (FLEX), Vtape in Toronto, and ULTRAcinema in Xalapa, Mexico. She is a member of the collective screening project On-Film and co-curated with Herb Shellenberger the 2018 Winter/Spring Flaherty NYC series ‘Common Visions’ at Anthology Film Archives. 

Labour of Love is a programme encompassing multiple spectrums of effort, care, affect and compassion in new forms of documentary cinema, film and video essays. The unifying aspect of the films in the programme is the integrity of agency, be it the directors or composers, to the field and the topic. The represented communities or subcultural phenomena are profiled and challenged by most instutionalised forms of support or togetherness. They stretch and accommodate themselves in the cracks of globally wired processes.

Dane Komljen lives and works in Berlin, after studying at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing and the Universität der Künste in Berlin. His short films have been shown and awarded at the Locarno Film Festival, IFF Rotterdam, Festival de Cannes, FID Marseille, Toronto IFF, New York FF and Sarajevo FF. In late 2018, the ICA in London organized a full retrospective of his work. Currently he is developing two new feature length projects, A Treatise on Limnology and Desire Lines.

D'Angelo Madsen Minax works in documentary and hybrid filmmaking formats, narrative cinema, experimental and essay film, sound and music performance, and media installation. Drawing from his personal ethnographies and histories of participation in justice-oriented communities, Minax's projects explore queer and trans embodiment, chosen and biological structures of kinship, cosmic phenomena, and technologically mediated experiences. D'Angelo Madsen's works have screened and/or exhibited at spaces including the European Media Art Festival (Germany), the Ann Arbor Film Festival (MI), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Anthology Film Archives (NYC), The British Film Institute (UK), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), REDCAT (Los Angeles), and hundreds of LGBT film festivals around the world. Minax is currently a Tribeca Film Institute All-Access Fellow and an Assistant Professor of Film and Video Art at the University of Vermont.

Akosua Adoma Owusu is a Ghanaian-American filmmaker, producer, and cinematographer whose films address the collision of identities. Interpreting the notion of "double consciousness," coined by sociologist and civil rights activist W. E. B. Du Bois to define the experience of black Americans negotiating selfhood in the face of discrimination and cultural dislocation, Owusu aims to create a third cinematic space or consciousness. In her works, feminism, queerness, and African identities interact in African, white American, and black American cultural environments. Named by Indiewire as one of 6 pre-eminent Avant-Garde Female Filmmakers Who Redefined Cinema, she was a featured artist at the 56th Robert Flaherty Film Seminar programmed by renowned critic and film curator Dennis Lim. 

During Cinema Camp Akosua Adoma Owusu will do a workshop for filmmakers, film critics and researchers.

Janina Sabaliauskaitė is a Lithuanian artist and independent curator based in Newcastle upon Tyne, who has a background in photography and whose interests span LGBTQ+archives, erotica and film history. Her works address the issues of identity, gender and sexuality. Janina’s journey to erotica & female pleasure started after co-curating the On Our Backs: An Archive exhibition. On Our Backs was the first women-run erotica magazine and the first magazine to feature lesbian erotica for a lesbian audience in the United States. (1984-2006). Personal Archives of Desire consist of some films from Cinenova archive - volunteer-run charity that preserves and distributes the work of feminist film and video makers (founded in 1991, London). Cinenova currently distributes over 300 titles that include artists’ moving image, experimental film, narrative feature films and documentary and educational videos made from the 1920s to the late 1990s. Janina’s Recent Projects include: Artist in residence: NGO Meno Avilys, where together with a cinema and media historian Lina Kaminskaitė - Jančorienė, Janina is undertaking a period of research exploring the archives of women who worked in Lithuanian film industry back in the Soviet Lithuania (Summer, 2019); Co- curator of Cinematic Inclusions: 3 day film festival exploring Lithuanian poetic and experimental documentary filmmaking of restored cinema (Star & Shadow Cinema, Spring, 2019); Curatorial residency (Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, present - 2021).
